General Hospital
2021
Emphasising the social value of the quality of the service offered to the citizen, the extension of the hospital generates a new Belvedere, a walk-view point with arcades, facing the estuary, which also serves as the functional backbone of the hospital. This large public space will form an east-west axis that provides access and visibility to all the facilities of the extension, creating a situation of legibility and clarity in the circulation of the complex. This open public space, in which to wait or walk for patients, family and friends, is also a space for the health personnel, looking towards the sea, and which can be walked under arcades for rainy conditions.
The sanitary space is an environment in which the human being immerses himself in reflections and psychological states that go beyond the practical purpose of going to receive a treatment. This environment, in which a diagnosis or an illness can transform a person's life, has an aura of concern and exceptional intensity that isbarely taken into consideration in the architecture of hospitals. Just as the patient heals through medical treatment, we believe that architecture can contribute to providing people with experiences and reasons to reflect on their own health, and on the value of health in human life. We think that this project provides situations of contemplation and reflection through the dialogue that the building establishes with the landscape.
