Pohang cultural museum
2026
Our proposal for the new Pohang museum is conceived as 71 Sparks of Light, one for each of the 71 student soldiers of Pohang. Seventy-one strip windows with integrated LED lighting cross the building's metal skin. At dusk they begin to glow, and by night the volume disappears into the ridge, leaving only a field of luminous lines visible from the city, the beach and the factories.
By day, the museum rests on the hill as a megalithic presence, learning from the dolmens of Pohang in the way it meets the ground. Its compact form leaves most of the landscape and its trees untouched, opens views towards the ocean and the city, and steps with the topography to minimise earthworks and foundations.
The museum also gives the hill back to the city. The covered plaza, the lookout, the event space and the tiered seating sit outside the ticketed areas, open to everyone. Car park, upper path and forecourt become one continuous route through the existing Yeonorang and Seonyeo park, with the museum as its summit. Along the way, small interventions gather the memory of Pohang: stories told by its students, families and residents, heard from benches and QR points in the landscape.
Inside, five large trusses hang the permanent exhibition floor, leaving it free of columns so the galleries can adapt as the collection evolves. Above them, a sheltered roof plaza extends the exhibitions outdoors and hosts concerts, dinners and events that help sustain the institution.
